How to improve your French with a podcast – learn real French – improve your spoken French

Learning guide

How to improve your French with a podcast.

If you struggle to understand French, it’s not always a level problem. It’s often an exposure problem. Here’s how we fix that.

Prefer to watch? We made a short video that covers everything in this guide.

Real French, as it’s actually spoken.

Not slowed down. Not simplified. Not scripted.

In most learning content, conversations are slowed down, simplified, or performed by actors. We do the opposite.

In our episodes, 99.9% unscripted, you hear two French people talking naturally. With a real rhythm, familiar expressions, hesitations, humour, and sometimes disagreements. In short: like in real life.

Our most popular episode

Les secrets du français parlé

We published this one almost by accident on YouTube, without really expecting much. It got 500,000 views. It’s the episode that pushed us to go all-in on video, and a great place to start if you want to understand what we do.

A complete approach. All 4 skills.

Most podcasts only train one. Here’s how we work on all four.

01

Listening: train your ear

Understanding native speakers is often the biggest obstacle. At first, everything goes too fast. Then, with regular listening, something shifts: certain expressions become familiar, your brain starts to follow the rhythm naturally.

The key is consistency. One episode a week can make a real difference. Some listeners re-listen to each episode several times, and that’s often when progress becomes visible.

02

Reading: see what you hear

Our transcripts are written by Isabelle, a certified French teacher. Every word, every sound, every familiar expression is transcribed exactly as spoken, not simplified, not smoothed out. French spelling and pronunciation are very different: the transcript is the bridge between the two.

Free transcripts available. Episodes 11 to 52 come with a free transcript. No payment needed, just create a free account.

03

Speaking: yes, a podcast can help you speak!

Fluency in listening directly feeds fluency in speaking. We regularly get messages from listeners who passed their DELF or started speaking more naturally, thanks to the podcast. Input becomes output.

To speed things up: summarise episodes out loud, record yourself and listen back, talk to yourself in French every day. And when we ask you a question at the end of an episode, answer out loud, as if we were there.

04

Writing: the skill that consolidates everything

Writing in French forces you to slow down and put into practice everything you’ve been absorbing: vocabulary, grammar, expressions. It’s also pressure-free. No one is watching, nothing is timed. That’s why our activity sheets include writing prompts with every episode.

From our listeners

“I was sitting in a little café in Manchester listening to an episode, and it felt like being there with Nathan and Violaine. The best podcast I know.” — Sean, England

Tools designed to help you progress.

Listening is good. Listening with the right tools is something else.

The big advantage of a podcast is that it goes everywhere with you: on public transport, while cooking, while walking. French fits into your life, not the other way around.

What we often recommend:

  • 1Re-listen to an episode more than once. The second listen always reveals things you missed.
  • 2Take notes on new vocabulary, then reuse it out loud or in writing.
  • 3Summarise the episode in your own words, out loud, in writing, whatever works.
  • 4Record yourself speaking French and listen back. It’s uncomfortable, and that’s exactly why it works.

Our episodes are now filmed.

Because language is more than just sound.

Since we started filming our episodes, something changed for our listeners. You can now see our gestures, our expressions, the moments we laugh, the moments we disagree. Watching two native speakers interact, not just hearing them, adds a layer of understanding that audio alone can’t provide.

And also: understanding French culture.

You can’t separate a language from its culture.

Through our conversations, you discover what makes French people laugh, how they debate, what irritates them, how they see the world. A contemporary, living France, sometimes contradictory, always fascinating.

Guided by two teachers.

We’re not just two French people with a microphone. We each have a master’s degree in teaching French as a foreign language, and thousands of hours of teaching behind us: in Spain, in Romania, and online since 2018. Before all that, we were journalists. We know what blocks learners, why some things just don’t stick, and how to present the language so it stays. Every episode is built with that in mind, even when it sounds like a simple conversation.
